Quilt Study Group
July 12, 2010

Greetings to all quilt study enthusiasts! With the success of our first meeting behind us, we are looking forward to our second meeting of PHMQSG on Monday, July 12. The meeting will begin at 12:30, with the social time before the meeting beginning at noon. This month Karen Powers will be sharing a timeline to use in the dating of quilts, using PHM quilts to demonstrate the timeline. Also, Judy Bauer will be sharing what is happening in the U.K. in quilt study, and will be discussing characteristics of antique British quilts. After these sessions we will have special refreshments: tea with real English scones, served in the traditional manner with strawberry jam. Please let us know by July 5 if you plan to attend, so Judy will know how many scones to bake! RSVP to Judy at jfbauer@ptd.net.
Here are some other "thimblefuls" of info:
1. Christine compiled the info from the surveys which the group members filled out at the last meeting, and the committee enjoyed reading them, as they were full of great ideas. We will be discussing the surveys further at the meeting. Every person participating in the survey agreed to the necessity of dues, with suggestions ranging from $20-$50/year. The committee has decided that the membership dues will be $25/year, with a $5 discount for Packwood House Museum members. (For information on how to become a PHM member, check out the website at www.packwoodhousemuseum.com, where you will also find a description of all the benefits of being a member of the museum.) Yearly membership in PHMQSG will run from July 1 through June 30, with dues being collected at July meetings, so please come prepared with dues if you plan to join PHMQSG. Anyone who becomes a member of PHMQSG between January and June will pay half price for dues for that year.
2. We are looking forward to a show-and-tell time at the September meeting. We are concerned that we will have so many s-a-t quilts at one meeting that we won't have time to study them all, so we have decided to limit the number of s-a-t's for each meeting. Beginning with the July meeting, we will have an on-going sign-up sheet available for people who would like to bring a quilt for s-a-t. Going in order from the list, a designated number of people will be asked to bring their quilts (one/person) to the meeting. We will then continue, going in order from the list, having s-a-t quilts at future meetings. We have been discussing having a full meeting of show-and-tell quilts, which will no doubt happen in the future.
3. PHM opened its summer, 2010 exhibit, "The Art of Craft," June 15. The cost to see the exhibit is $5, but is free to museum members. Of special interest to quilt-study people is the "textile room" in the exhibit.
4. PHM always has quilts on display throughout the Packwood House itself, with a special, periodically changed display in the Shoemaker Room. Christine Sperling has compiled an information list of the quilts currently on display in the house, which will be available at the front desk in the Tour Center.
5. Remember to bring with you any donations you plan to make to the PHM "Christmas in July" tag sale. Any gently used Christmas items, or hand-made Christmas items (especially quilted items, such as ornaments) will be gladly appreciated.
6. If you would like to "make a day of it," we suggest the following things to do before our meeting:
a. Visit Verna's Fabric Shop, where you can feed your "fabric addiction";
b. Visit the Slifer House Museum, just a short drive from PHM (check for opening times);
c. See the PHM summer exhibit in the Kelly Gallery (let us know if you plan to come early to see the exhibit, as PHM is closed on Mondays);
d. Have an early lunch and visit the shops at the famous Country Cupboard Restaurant.
We hope to see you at the meeting!
